General information

Buspar belongs to the group of antidepressants. It is prescribed for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder and social phobia.


It is recommended to take the medicine as it was prescribed by your doctor. Take it with a glass of water. Swallow pill the whole. Do not exceed your dosage.


Before starting your treatment with Buspar tell your doctor if you have allergy to the medicine, bipolar confusion, kidney, liver or eye problem. Do not take alcoholic beverages and grapefruit. Middle aged can be more sensitive to the medicine.


You should not use BuSpar if you are allergic to buspirone. Do not use BuSpar if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and patients with hypersensitivity to Buspar can't use the medicine. Drinking alcohol may increase certain side effects of BuSpar. Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with buspirone and lead to unwanted side effects. Discuss the use of grapefruit products with your doctor.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to BuSpar: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Side effects can be the following: fever, insomnia, tremor, anxiety, blurred vision, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you experience any side effect not listed above contact your doctor at once.

Drug Interactions

Buspar can interact with the following medicines: haloperidol, rifampicin. Also it can interact with alcohol, grapefruit, grapefruit juice and grapefruit extract.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.


If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are chest pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, and feeling light-headed or fainting.


Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
